Here is a screenshot of the Battle screen. This screen is displayed whenever the party enters an encounter with other creatures.

Battle Music

Legends of M'ystifa generally sticks to one battle tune for most encounters. When the battle music changes, you'll know something is up.

Rare Creature

Rare creatures (those found in a certain location but very rarely) have a unique tune to distinguish them from normal creatures. They also usually have a unique name and are generally more difficult than the other types of monsters found in the same area.

Boss Creature

Boss creatures (those guarding important treasure or locations) have a unique tune to distinguish them from other creatures. They always have a unique name and spawn in the same place every time.

Epic Battle

Epic creatures (those that are key to completing the adventure) have their own individually unique tunes to distinguish them from other boss creatures. These types of battle are story-driven and key to competing the adventure.

Battle Order
Battle in Legends of M'ystifa is turn based, with each character and each creature taking one turn per round.

The order in which the characters and creatures attack is based on the Speed value. Speed is derived from the Dexterity attribute. For example, a Small Rat is likely to move quite faster (and go first each round) than a Giant Ogre (that would probably be quite slow and go last each round).

There are spells in game that can alter a character or creatures speed, thus increasing there ability to have a turn sooner each round.

Round
A round consists of each character and creature having one turn. Once the cycle is complete, it becomes the next round and each character and creature has another turn.

Some epic battles can last hundreds of rounds.

Turn / Target Panels

These two panels help you to know who is currently having a turn and who is currently the target.

Each character and creature gets to have one turn per round, and the order in which they have a turn is determined by the Speed value.

To change targets, simply click on the name of the creature in the Creature Panel or click on a character portrait.

Battle Message Panel
This panel is your source for all of the action in battle. Whenever a character or creature takes damage, casts a spell, uses an item or tries to flee, messages in this panel will carry the details.

There are different message colors to help you distinguish different types of actions.

Death messages are red. Messages that are beneficial to your party are green. Messages that are detrimental to your party are an off-red. Information is in white.

When a weapon or piece of armor is about to break, a warning alert will sound and information about it will also be displayed in this panel.

Party Panel
The party panel, which is exactly the same as the panel on the Main and Magic screens, displays all of the pertinent information about your characters.

Name

The name of a character. The color of the name will be white if the character is alive, red if the character is dead.

Portrait

The visual appearance of the character. In battle, this can be clicked to make the character your current target.

Level

The number in the bottom-right hand corner of the character portrait.

Buffs / Debuffs / Global Enchantments

Beside the portrait, a green * represents buffs, a red * represents debuffs. Global Enchantments from items will also cause these indicators to appear depending on the effect. You can click on an indicator to get a listing of what effects the character has on.

Experience Meter

The characters remaining XP needs to make it to the next level.

Health

The characters current / maximum health points (HP).

Mana

The characters current / maximum mana points (MP).

Gold

The amount of gold the party is currently carrying.

Food

The amount of food the party is currently carrying.

Commands
When it is your turn in battle, all four of the command options will be available for use.

Attack

The Attack command will cause your character to shoot/swing at the current target you have selected. You cannot attack your own players.

You can also right-click this command to access a special ability in combat, if your characters class has one. An example ability would be Kick (Monk), Coin (Samurai), Aim (Archer) and Throw (Ninja).

Your chance to hit a target with melee or missle weapons is based on your attack skill with that weapon compared to the melee or missle defense of the creature. You can find magical items that have built-in effects that make it easier to hit targets. This is also influenced by the con of the creature. It is much more difficult to strike a creature that is much higher level than your character.

Spells

If the character having the turn is a magic caster, this option will bring up the spell list panel. Simply select the spell you wish to cast and press Cast. Make sure you have selected your desired target for the spell.

Non-magic casters will not be able to use this command.

Items

This command allows you to use items that your party is carrying during combat. Once selected, the inventory list will be displayed and an item can be selected for use.

Not all items can be used during combat.

Run

When all is almost lost, you can attempt to flee the battle. Doing so will save your party from the encounter and allow you to rest/recuperate before continuing your adventure.

If all of the creatures in battle are gray con, you have a 100% chance of fleeing the battle. If they aren't, you must pass a run check. This compares your characters Running skill with the levels and number of creatures you are fighting.

It is much easier to run from a single creature than it is to escape three.

Creature Panel
The Creature Panel provides all of the details about the creatures you are battling.

Name

The name of the creature is in a color representing it's average con to your party. You can read more about con in the Creatures section.

Health / Mana

The large progress bar represents how much health a creature has left. The smaller progress bar below the health bar represents how much mana a creature has left. A creature is not a magic caster if this bar is empty from the outset of battle.

Buffs / Debuffs

If a creature is under the influence of any buff or debuff, the Green or Red * indicator will be visible. You can click on the indicator to get a listing of what effects the creature has on that are buffs or debuffs.

Shortcut Keys
Shortcut keys make some of the most common tasks you'll perform in battle much faster to perform. These include the following:

Commands

Press 'A' on the keyboard to attack with your missle or melee weapon.

Press 'S' to bring up your spell list if the character is a magic caster.

Press 'I' to bring up the party inventory list to use an item.

Press 'R' to try and flee battle.

Quick Cast

Press set quick cast keys allow you to press the number keys '1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6' to cast spells. Simply select your target and press the number that you bound a spell to. You must set up quick cast keys in the Magic screen.

End Of Battle
Battle can end any of three different ways.

Run

This happens when your party successfully uses the Run command, or when an item is used to flee battle.

Victory

Victory is reached when all of the creatures in battle are either defeated or flee. This triggers the Victory screen to be displayed, which notes how much XP and GP the party has been awarded. A loot list of items the creatures were carrying is also available for your party to rummage through. You can loot an item by selecting the item and pressing the spacebar or Loot command.

Defeat

Defeat is reached when all of your characters are killed. Your party drops all of it's GP on death (unless they are very low level, in which case there is no penalty) and reappears back in the village last visited.
